Funding Proposal for FY 2006 - 07

Tennessee Student Assistance Award (TSAA)

 

 Low-income traditional and non-traditional qualified Tennesseans

 

 $42.3 million

Current funding leaves over 31,000 eligible students without funding.

 

$30.4 million

This incremental increase will fund an additional 15,800 students who apply by  May 1, 2006.

 

 

 Ned McWherter Scholars Program

 

Top academic Tennessee high school graduates

Minimum Requirements:

3.5 GPA and 29 ACT or 1280 SAT

Current expenditures fund only 200 of over 700 eligible student scholars.

Tennessee Teaching Scholars Program

 

Program is designed to attract and keep qualified teachers in Tennessee.  Recipients must teach equal to the number of years they receive the scholarship or repay the funds.

Stagnation with current spending levels has caused the program to fund less and less students.  Historically the program funded over 200 recipients, currently 151.

Designed to increase the maximum award from $4,500 per year to $4,950 and to increase the recipients by 60 students.
