Founded in 1794, Tusculum College is the first college in Tennessee, the twentyeighth
oldest college in the nation, and the first institution affiliated with the
Presbyterian Church (USA) to admit women. Tusculum continues to be a leader in
education today. The College was the first east of the Mississippi to adopt a focused
calendar and the first institution of higher education in East Tennessee to provide
degree programs specifically designed for working adults. The College strives to
meet student and community needs with additions of such major programs as
nursing, criminal justice, and chemistry and the updating of facilities such as the
recent renovation and expansion of the library and the current construction of a
state-of-the-art, 100,000-square-foot science and math facility. To meet increasing
student housing demand, Tusculum College constructed two new apartment-style
residence halls, which opened in 2013.
